It Came From Beneath The Sea… Again!

Before I started working on Maya I worked on some Tales From The Crypt stories and I did two issues of a four-issue miniseries for Bluewater Productions. The series now becomes a graphic novel which will be out in November 2010. The graphic novel is the official sequel to the classic Ray Harryhausen movie: It Came From Beneath the Sea. This is the sequel to the cult film. In the 1950s, the U.S. Navy encountered and destroyed a gigantic octopus that attacked shipping and wreaked havoc on the west coast of the United States. American forces killed the creature and ended the threat once and for all. Or so they thought. They were wrong. Now, another monster is rising in the warm blue waters surrounding Taru Taru, a speck of land far out in the Pacific. And this time it’s worse than anyone ever imagined.

Updated Sketchbook!

I have added two images to the sketchbook. A really old concept I did of Maya showing her in a kitchen… but not cooking. And when you look closely you will notice I used the name Ringo originally as the name of a dog. The second image I’ve added is the quick brush test painting I did of Leviathan. This is the one from the last blog entry..

Finally! MAYA is back!

If you want to know why the break took so long you can go to the blog where I posted some more information on the matter. I’m happy to see a new finished page from the story myself… and I’m curious if you are still reading it!?

I really hope I haven’t lost too many of you over the last weeks.

What happened to MAYA?

This long break wasn’t planned and I really thought I could start working on Maya again after a short break. So what happened?
My family and I had some health problems which took away a few weeks and getting things back to normal again took it’s time. Now everything is fine, the family is okay (my boy has a fever right now… but it’s already better then the day before), but my job is keeping me busy for the last months now because the game I’m working on as the art director will be out soon. Maybe it helps a little if I tell you the game is great and I think you all will like it a lot. Unfortunately I still can’t talk about details yet.
I have started to work on new Maya sequential pages and you can take a look at Maya and Leviathan in a brush test painting I did in Photoshop here: ‘Maya and Leviathan‘.
If you like my comic art and sequential storytelling you should think about pre-ordering my upcoming comic ‘It Came From Beneath The Sea… Again!‘, the comic sequel to the 1955 monster horror movie (with special effects by Ray Harryhausen). As I post this there is a special offer at amazon and when you order the trade right now you can save 5 dollars and you only pay 10$ instead 15$! Here is a little more information about the trade paperback: I did the first two issues of this four issue mini-series. The four issues will be out as a trade paperback in November 2010. I colored some of the pages and did the cover art for the book. The story is really entertaining and I enjoyed working on the scripts by Clay and Susan Griffith a lot. Unfortunately I had to pull the plug after issue two because this was the time I became a partner at Rough Sea Games and started working on games (again) as an art director. The last two issues of the trade are drawn by Todd Tennant who is known for his monster art.

A huge THANK YOU! too all comic fans and fans of Maya who made my signing at Hermkes Romanboutique in Wuerzburg a really fantastic experience! I have to thank the whole team from Hermkes Romanboutique who made this first German Free Comic Book Day a really great event for everyone. I was asked a lot about when I will start doing new pages for Maya. Here is my answer: “I still have a lot of game related work right now, and because MAYA is my unpaid side project I’m doing in my spare time this makes it the last project on my priority list. Paid jobs come first and right now it looks like it will take a few weeks more until I can continue the story. The game I’m working on is really great fun and I’m sure I can tell you more about it soon btw. So in just a few weeks you will get some exciting game news AND the long awaited new MAYA pages.”
